About
The Fiona Stanley Hospital is the largest building project ever undertaken by the Government of Western Australia. The 783-bed facility has 6400 rooms, covering 32 hectares at a cost of $2 billion. The hospital campus includes the main Fiona Stanley Hospital tower with 18 theatres and over 22 wards on nine levels.
The Fiona Stanley incorporates technological innovations such as wi-fi controlled "robots" that deliver catering towards, and mobile computer workstations on wheels to assist staff with dispensing of medications.
Working with Optus, the RFI DAS team was brought into this greenfield project to design, integrate, install and commission an active communications solution into a newly constructed hospital in Western Australia. The in-building coverage (IBC) is designed to be shared with all carriers and to provide optimum coverage for both hospital staff and the public.
The Challenge
The biggest challenge the RFI team faced was the rapid deployment schedule while also keeping the install clean and in a non-intrusive aesthetic condition in a completely finished building.
The final fit-out took place after the hospital construction was completed, and had to be clinically clean, ready for acceptance of patients immediately after deployment.
Solution
In order to provide an active communications solution, RFI designed, installed, and commissioned a hybrid DAS system that combined high power active RF repeater equipment with passive distribution.
The greenfield project was designed, supplied, installed, and tested in four months.
Results
RFI designed a DAS system that operates across all 7 bands, covering 147,000m2 of floor space and 28,000m2 of floor car parks occupying six different buildings.
The system was delivered clinically clean ready for the acceptance of patients, and the RFI team completed installation one month ahead of schedule.
It provided technology to cover all 7 bands and is currently the only "high power" active fibre repeater system in Australia that can provide 2300TDD today.
